On October 15th, 2021, the First National Student Engineering Geology Innovation and Practice Competition was held in Qingdao. The group of Bai Ji, Li Jincheng and Li Zhihai, jointly supervised by Cao Chen and Chen Hui’e, won the special prize of the competition; the group of Luo Yonggui, Lei Haomin and Li Yuchao, jointly supervised by Song Shengyuan and Xu Xin, won the second prize of the competition.
Our representative team from our school has surpassed all the other teams in the competition after three stages of a comprehensive competition, including preliminary rounds, semi-finals, and finals. We ranked first and were far ahead of the other representative teams. Both of our teams achieved excellent results in the competition, and our school was awarded the honorary title of “Excellent Organization Award”.
The National College Engineering Geology Innovation Practice Competition aims to provide a platform for college students majoring in geology, civil engineering, environmental engineering, and other related majors to stimulate inspiration, showcase talent, and enhance communication. At the same time, the competition aims to cultivate students’ abilities to link theory with practice and innovate, and to improve their initiative, enthusiasm, and creativity in learning.
In the preliminary round, with the support and guidance of the Department of Engineering Geology, our school carefully organized the pre-selection, training, and guidance of the participating teams. Through the selection process by the competition organizing committee, our school sent two teams with the works “Eco-protection Technology for Tailings and Waste Rock Slopes with Cementing Agent and Organic Concrete” and “Green Protection Technology for Expansive Soil Landslides with Joint Steel Bars and Anchors”, and both teams made it to the finals.
After the preliminary screening, a total of 29 geological universities in China and 58 teams entered the finals. In the final stage, two teams from our school fully demonstrated their competition models, and the team members provided detailed explanations to the judges, who were experts from the Engineering Geology Committee, fully showcasing the innovative ideas of the models. They also answered the experts’ questions wonderfully and carefully listened to their advice, receiving widespread praise. In the model design defense and knowledge Q&A section, the team members performed outstandingly with a coordinated and precise approach. Based on their strong professional competence, they broke into the finals and battled with the other nine representative teams from different universities.
The final competition was held on a battlefield without smoke. All ten qualifying teams were strong and had hidden talents, but our school’s team faced the challenge fearlessly. With their quick reflexes and rich knowledge reserves, they stood out in two rounds of fierce knowledge competition, leading with a total score of 244 points, 37 points ahead of the second-place team. In the end, they won the championship and were awarded the highest honor of “Special Prize”.
The Jilin University team members performed excellently throughout the competition and received unanimous recognition from everyone, earning the honorary title of “Excellent Organization Award”. The competition participants and teachers embodied the spirit of Jilin University’s students, which is to be practical, innovative, aspiring, and striving, demonstrating the style of Jilin University students in the competition.
