To proactively respond to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, fully utilize high-quality educational resources worldwide, and promote the global competence of talent training, our institute successfully hosted an “Arctic Cryosphere Evolution and Climate Change” academic workshop from November 24th to December 9th, 2021, with the support of the “Jilin University Global Competence Enhancement Program” during the 2022 winter vacation.
The workshop invited seven expert scholars from Moscow State University and the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as the University of Alberta in Canada, to conduct online teaching and sharing for a period of two weeks, totaling 21 teaching hours. A total of 36 teachers and students from our institute participated throughout the entire workshop.
The workshop content covered the scientific research frontier and hot academic issues such as global climate change, permafrost in polar regions, Antarctic ice sheets and ice core properties, and carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage. The workshop consisted of keynote speeches, expert Q&A, and thematic discussions. The lecturers shared their insights based on years of scientific research and teaching experience, leading teachers, and students to explore the development process, latest research progress, research methods and instruments, and other related content in relevant fields. The workshop content included popular science knowledge and professional technical theory, as well as the introduction of the latest research results and discussions on research methods, giving our teachers and students an immersive experience of English communication and allowing them to understand the small classroom environment and atmosphere of foreign countries, as well as appreciate the charm of internationally renowned scholars.
This workshop brought together the best and most active academic resources in the Russian polar research field and the Canadian petroleum engineering field. The teachers and students who participated in the course learning all benefited greatly. Through the platform built by our institute, students’ international dialogue ability and professional quality were effectively improved, their international perspectives were expanded, and the participating teachers and students had the opportunity to have close contact with famous experts in the field of geological resources and geological engineering and to understand the research situation of the world’s top universities in related fields, which strengthened their confidence in continuing scientific research. In the future, with the support of the Jilin University Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, our college will continue to expand and improve high-quality overseas course series projects, creating better external conditions for teachers and students to enhance their global competence.
