On September 8 afternoon, Prof. Feng Xiating, President of Northeastern University (NU) and an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and Prof. Wang Jianhua, Vice-President of NU, headed a delegation of 8, visited the College of Construction Engineering (CCE) for academic exchanges and attended the 4th CCE Academic Forum during their attendance of the 2021 International Conference on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application (Changchun), the China-ROK University Presidents Forum and the Presidents Forum of Six Universities in Northeastern China. During the forum, Prof. Feng Xiating delivered an academic report themed ‘Research on the Fracturing Process of Deep Engineering Rocks’. Hosted by the Dean of the CCE Prof. Dai Zhenxue, the forum was presented by President of Jilin University (JLU) Prof. Zhang Xi, Vice-President of JLU Prof. Zhao Hongwei, chief officials from the CCE, President’s Office and Office of Global Engagement along with over 100 faculties and students from the CCE.

Prof. Feng delivering the academic report
In his academic report, Prof. Feng introduced the development history of deep engineering and splendid achievements China has made so far as well as his own practices in scientific research and innovation. He indicated that scientific technology and research in this field is closely related to national strategy and elaborated the importance and prospects of rock mass mechanics and engineering. Particulaly, he gave a full introduction of the key innovation technologies and the latest frontier technologies in the study of fracturing process of deep engineering rocks and pointed out the key future development trend in this field.
Q & A Section
At the exchange and discussion section, Prof. Dai Zhenxue first made a report on the current discipline development, and then gave a full introduction of the development process, major advantages of CCE as well as the challenges it was faced with and thoughts about the responses. The present faculties and students raised many questions and Prof. Feng answered one by one. He fully appreciated the achievements CCE has made by improving the quality of geological engineering and civil engineering disciplines as well as the excellent academic spirit of faculties and students. Moreover, he elaborated his proposal about promoting further exchanges and cooperation between the corresponding disciplines between the two universities.

Prof. Zhang Xi pointed out in his summary that the academic exchange has inspired the new ideas and provided key momentum for the cooperation between JLU and NU in discipline development, scientific research and personnel training, etc. He hoped that the two universities could learn from each other, further enhance deep cooperation, jointly improve the personnel training level, contribute to the rejuvenation of China by the development of science and education as well as better serve the revitalization of northeast China.
Academician Feng and his delegation visiting the oil shale research achievement exhibition of JLU
Before the forum, Prof. Feng and his delegation members visited National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of In-Situ Conversion, Drilling and Exploitation Technology for Oil Shale and the oil shale research exhibition in JLU. They were accompanied by Prof. Guo Wei, Executive Dean of CCE and Executive Deputy Director of National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of In-Situ Conversion, Drilling and Exploitation Technology for Oil Shale, who gave a full introduction of the research progress the lab has made so far, including resource assessment, exploration technologies, drilling and exploitation equipment, multipurpose utilization and in-situ conversion of the oil shale. Moreover, he presented the current achievements of the pioneer experimental project of in-situ conversion of the oil shale as well as the shale oil produced in Nong’an and Fuyu County, Jilin.
