Aiming to meet the major strategic needs of China's energy development in the 21st century and the great demand for professionals in drilling and production of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon resources, the Department of Petroleum Engineering was founded in November 2010.
There are 11 staff members in the Department of Petroleum Engineering, including 4 professors (including 3 doctoral supervisors), 5 associate professors and 2 engineers. Nine of them hold a doctoral degree. The department has carried out research on oil shale drilling technology, natural gas hydrate drilling technology and technologies of downhole tools, such as impactors, bionic bits and self-balancing drilling tools centering conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources drilling technology. These efforts have been proven fruitful. In the past five years, the department won 1 Second Prize of National Award for Technological Invention, 1 First Prize of Jilin Provincial Award for Technological Invention and 1 Second Prize of Ministry of National Resources Award for Science and Technology. At meanwhile, the department has undertaken and participated in more than 25 national major special projects, National Natural Science Foundation and major horizontal cooperation programs, with a total research fund of more than RMB 22 million yuan. In addition, more than 80 academic papers were published, and more than 100 national invention patents were applied for and granted.
