The Department of Engineering Geology was founded in 1952 by Professor Liu Guochang, a famous engineering geologist and the founder of engineering geology in China. There are 14 faculty and staff, including 5 professors, 6 associate professors and 1 senior engineer. Two professional teachers have won the Gu Dezhen Youth Science and Technology Award and the Silver Hammer Award for Geological Science and Technology.
Great achievements have been made in three-dimensional structural rock mechanics and stability evaluation of fractured slopes, development of engineering detection instruments, and prevention and control of geological disasters, etc. The department has participated in and completed the engineering geological evaluation of the Three Gorges Project of the Yangtze River, Baihetan Hydropower Station, Wudongde Hydropower Station, Xulong Hydropower Station and Yixian Water Shortage and Energy Storage Hydropower Station in Hebei Province, and has made great contributions to China’s economic construction. The investigation, evaluation and treatment of sudden geological disasters such as landslides, collapses and debris flows in Jilin Province have been studied in depth, which has contributed to the development of local economy.
The department has won a number of provincial and ministerial awards for scientific and technological achievements and teaching achievements, and has published many monographs and textbooks. The department has obtained more than 20 projects from National Natural Science Foundation, the Ministry of Science and Technology and “863 Program” such as a special topic on major basic scientific issues of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway and regional joint project. More than 400 papers have been indexed in SCI and EI.
