On the morning of November 27th, 2022, the 15th International Forum for PhD Students of Jilin University—Sub-Forum on Environment, Resources, and Engineering—and the 6th Construction Engineering Academic Forum—were grandly opened. The forum has the theme Innovation, Development, and Integration: The Harmonious Unity of Environment, Resources, and Engineering. The forum was hosted by the Graduate School and the Graduate Work Department of the Party Committee of Jilin University, organized by the College of Construction Engineering, and co-organized by the Journal of Jilin University (Earth Science Edition). Zhao Yue, the Minister of the Graduate Work Department and the Deputy Dean of the Graduate School of Jilin University, Vice Minister Yu Yao, the Head of the International Exchange Department, Dong Mo, the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Jilin University and the Executive Editor-in-Chief of the Earth Science Edition, Qiu Dianming, the President of the College of Construction Engineering, Guo Wei, and the Vice President Zhang Wen, as well as the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President Yan Guodong, also participated in the opening ceremony. The Vice President of the College of Construction Engineering, Wang Boxin, presided over the opening ceremony.

The sub-forum on Environment, Resources, and Engineering focuses on engineering construction and resource development under the “Revitalizing Northeast China” strategy, smart resources, and environment in the context of the information age, environmental impacts during resource utilization, and the interplay between resources, environment, natural disasters, and human engineering. It covers doctoral students in disciplines such as geological resources and engineering, civil engineering, geology, geophysics, environmental science and engineering, and hydraulic engineering, aiming to promote academic exchanges and collision of ideas among doctoral students from different disciplines, carry out multi-disciplinary collaborative innovation, further promote academic spirit, activate academic thoughts, create an academic atmosphere, and cultivate high-level interdisciplinary talents.

Since the announcement of the sub-forum and call for papers on November 1st, it has received widespread attention from doctoral students in related disciplines at domestic universities. Unfortunately, due to the sudden outbreak of the pandemic in Changchun recently, the sub-forum was held online with a significantly reduced duration and number of participants. After evaluation and selection by the sub-forum academic committee, 36 doctoral students from Zhejiang University, Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, Jilin University, and other universities were granted the opportunity to present their reports at the forum, and many more doctoral students had the chance to watch and listen to their wonderful academic presentations online.

Mr. Zhao Yue, the Minister of the Graduate Student Work Department and Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Jilin University, first warmly welcomed the experts and doctoral students participating in the forum and congratulated the successful opening of the sub-forum. Minister Zhao pointed out that Jilin University's International Academic Forum for Ph.D. Students was first held in 2005 and has since successfully hosted 14 sessions. Its purpose is to broaden academic horizons, inspire research wisdom, encourage theoretical innovation, and showcase practical achievements. It actively promotes exchanges and cross-disciplinary communication in science and technology, creates a good academic atmosphere among doctoral students, expands their academic horizons, and stimulates their academic enthusiasm. The forum has attracted more than 6,000 graduate students from over 80 universities at home and abroad to participate and give theme reports. As one of the key sub-forums supported by the 15th International Academic Forum for Ph.D. Students, the sub-forum on Environment, Resources, and Engineering is expected to produce more excellent knowledge results and solve more developmental problems through research and discussion to better assist in the cultivation of composite talents. It is hoped that the experts and doctoral students participating in the forum will focus on issues related to resources, environment, and engineering; fully exchange and interact on issues such as sustainable development; explore the frontiers; and continuously develop new areas and breakthroughs in scientific research. Finally, he wished the forum complete success.

During his speech, Mr. Qiu Dianming, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Jilin University and Executive Editor-in-Chief of the Earth Science Edition, pointed out that the 15th International Doctoral Forum of Jilin University is an important platform for scientific research and education at Jilin University. The sub-forum on Environment, Resources, and Engineering aimed to discuss and integrate interdisciplinary research on the worldwide issue of the impact of human engineering activities on the natural environment and natural resources. Excellent papers presented in this sub-forum will be given priority for publication in the Journal of Jilin University (Earth Science Edition). Finally, Mr. Qiu Dianming wished the conference a complete success.

Professor Guo Wei, President of the College of Construction Engineering, first expressed his gratitude to the Graduate School and the Journal of Jilin University for their strong support for the sub-forum on Environment, Resources, and Engineering. The theme of this forum is the harmonious unity of environment, resources, and engineering, which not only provides a platform for doctoral students to communicate fully but also reflects the colleges active implementation of the report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China on promoting green development and facilitating the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature through academic activities. President Guo pointed out that as new-era doctoral students in environmental resources and engineering, they should plan their development from the perspective of promoting the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature.

Four teachers, Zhang Wen, Chen Huie, Liu Baochang and Hu Zhongjun, were invited by the College of Construction Engineering to give invited presentations. The students passionately asked questions, and the invited guests had in-depth communication and interaction with the participating graduate students.

A total of 36 PhD students gave presentations in two sub-forums to share their latest research progress and research ideas. The panel of experts commented on each of them and discussed them in depth. The evaluation experts will select the excellent academic report award based on the ideas of the reporters, the quality of the report, and the questions asked by the experts, and the award certificates and conference souvenirs will be presented to the winners after the conference.

This sub-forum on environment, resources, and engineering builds a bridge between doctoral students from different universities, conducts interdisciplinary discussions on “Impact of human activities on the natural environment”, further promotes academic spirit and active academic thinking, creates an academic atmosphere, promotes academic exchanges and collisions of ideas among postgraduates of different disciplines, improves the scientific research level and innovation ability of doctoral students, promotes the development of interdisciplinary integration, and cultivates high-level talents in interdisciplinary disciplines.
