To keep promoting the cultivation of internationalized talents and accelerating the construction of "double first-class" disciplines, 13 students led by Mr. Gao Yuchao from the College of Construction Engineering and 19 teachers and students from the College of New Energy and Environment went to Korea for a 9-day academic and cultural exchange program on August 11.

This academic and cultural exchange activity got help from the Confucius Institute of Hanyang University and consisted of four parts: campus culture exchange, theoretical study, visit and practice, and Korean history and culture experience.

During the campus cultural exchange, the study tour members visited the Hanyang University History Museum and had an exchange meeting with Chinese students in Korea to learn about the development of Hanyang University and its education model which advocates students to learn and grow by themselves. The study tour members were advised to plan their university life with focus on career development and comprehensive ability enhancement: work hard in the second year to grasp major courses, learn more about the major and foster your interest; based on the situation of yourselves, analyze rationally the advantages and disadvantages of getting further education at home and abroad. The theoretical study session was conducted in English. The delegates gained a deep understanding of the social application value of their majors and the future direction of their studies after learning groundwater cycle and principles and applications of groundwater remediation engineering.

On the afternoon of the 13th, Mr. Gao Guangmin, Director of Confucius Institute of Hanyang University, issued course completion certificates to the 31 student members and warmly welcomed the students from Jilin University. Mr. Gao believes that it’s of great importance in individual growth and future development for students to participate in international exchange activities, and hoped that the study tour could help the students in their academic development. After that, the students visited some laboratories and enterprises, and experienced local culture.

From Aug. 14th to 18th, the study tour members visited the Bioenergy and Environmental Remediation Laboratory and the River Simulation Laboratory of Hanyang University. They experienced the environment of scientific research experiments and observed the operation of experimental instruments, and expressed that they hope to experience the fun of scientific research and experiments in person in their future professional studies. The study tour members also visited Seoul Water Purification Center to learn about the water treatment process, and the operation of water filtration and feeding systems. They visited the Water Resources and Environment Museum and realized the application value of their professional studies in serving the society in future.

Nanjido is a model of ecological restoration and environmental regeneration. During the tour, the study tour members learned how Nanjido was transformed from a heavily polluted garbage mountain to a World Cup park where people and the nature breathe together; how the renewable resources such as methane and fermentation gas generated from garbage disposal are utilized. Although the restoration of Nanjido is a 100-year project, it shows how amazing the ability of human beings is in changing the nature and transform the environments. As long as we have the belief of caring for the environment and protecting the ecology, the hope for human beings to have a better life is achievable! The study tour members also visited the Sihwaho Tidal Power Station and the Reed Wetland Park, deeply appreciating the importance of professional learning and the responsibility and mission of building a beautiful China in the future.

In the last part of the study tour, the members visited Gyeongbokgung Palace, National Museum of Korea, Samsung d’light, KBS TV Station, etc. to experience Korean culture and customs. During the 9-day exchange activities in Korea, the members gained a lot, broadened their horizons, enhanced their teamwork spirit and improved their international communication skills. The study tour encourages them to further explore the world with more far-sighted mind while guiding them to optimize their academic planning.
