On November 18, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) announced their list of newly elected members. Professor Sun Youhong , the former president of College of Construction Engineering (CCE), has been honored as this year's newest member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The Chinese Academy of Engineering has added 84 Chinese new members in the 2021 election. Among them, 11 are from the Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering Division, 10 from the Information and Electronics Engineering Division, 8 from the Chemical, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Division, 9 from the Energy and Mining Engineering Division, 10 from the Civil, Hydraulic and Architecture Engineering Division, 8 from the Environment & Light and Textile Industries Engineering Division, 10 from the Agriculture Division, 11 from the Medicine and Health Division, and 7 from the Engineering Management Division.

Sun Youhong, male, Han nationality, born in July 1965, a native of Rugao, Jiangsu Province, is a member of the CPC. He began to work in July 1990 with a postgraduate degree. He is now a professor and a doctoral supervisor with a doctorate in engineering. From September 1983 to September 1987, he studied in the Department of Exploration Engineering, Changchun Institute of Geology as an undergraduate. From September 1987 to July 1990, he studied in the Department of Exploration Engineering, Changchun Institute of Geology as a student pursuing master's degree. From July 1990 to April 1995, he was a teacher in the Department of Exploration Engineering, Changchun Institute of Geology. From April 1995 to August 2000, he was the deputy dean of the Department of Prospecting Engineering of Changchun Institute of Geology. During this period, he completed the study for PhD. as an on-the-job postgraduate majored in Exploration Engineering in the Department of Prospecting Engineering, Changchun Institute of Geology (renamed as University of Science and Technology of Changchun in Feb. 1997) from September 1994 to July 1998. From August 2000 to May 2001, he was the director of the graduate office of Jilin University, Chaoyang Campus. And from May 2001 to December 2008, he acted as the deputy dean of the CCE of Jilin University. During the period: from September 2002 to June 2006, he completed postdoctoral study of Agricultural Engineering, Jilin University; from June 2006 to June 2007, he was a visiting scholar in the Department of Construction Engineering, University of Nottingham, U.K. From December 2008 to September 2015, he served as the dean of CCE, Jilin University. From August 2015 to March 2019, he acted as a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Jilin University. At the same time, from September 2011 to March 2019, he acted as the Director of the Office of the National Potential Oil and Gas Resources (Oil Shale Exploration, Development and Utilization) Industry-Academia-Research-Application Cooperation and Innovation Base of Jilin University. From March 2019 to present, he has acted as the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of China University of Geosciences (Beijing).
Research interests and major achievements:
Prof. Sun Youhong is one of the leaders of the discipline of geological engineering (prospecting engineering field) in China. He has been engaged in theoretical research, technological innovation, and equipment development of prospecting engineering for many years. For geological and mineral exploration, prospecting engineering is an indispensable method with the main purpose of obtain continuous stratigraphic samples underground by means of drilling, which is the most direct way to achieve major discoveries in mineral search exploration and solve scientific mysteries. Focusing on the major strategic needs of the country such as gas hydrate and deep earth exploration, he has carried out cutting-edge technology research in prospecting engineering and achieved a series of landmark results, which have been used in production practice and are greatly supportive for the development of new geological and mineral discoveries and deep earth exploration. Prof. Sun Youhong has established the Key Laboratory of Drilling and Exploitation Technology in Complex Conditions, Ministry of Land and Resources and National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of In-situ Conversion, Drilling and Exploitation Technology for Oil Shale, which have expanded the application fields of drilling technology in China and promoted the scientific and technological progress of prospecting engineering in China.
Honors:
With his academic achievements, Prof. Sun Youhong has won 2 Second Prizes of National Technical Invention (both ranked first), the 13th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award, 5 Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Awards (all ranked first). His achievement was listed by the Ministry of Education in the Top 10 Sci-tech Progresses of China Universities. He was the first inventor of more than 50 authorized invention patents. He has published more than 110 papers and 3 books as the first author/corresponding author.
