Department of Geotechnical Engineering was established in 1952 on the basis of the Department of Engineering Geology of Changchun Geological College, and renamed as the Department of Geotechnical Engineering in 2000 when Jilin University was established. In the past 20 years, the department has cultivated a large number of graduates and postgraduates in geotechnical engineering field, and delivered a large number of senior talents and backbones in the field of geotechnical engineering for the engineering construction of China. With a wide range of research fields, Department of Geotechnical Engineering has been mainly devoted to the research on engineering properties of geotechnical bodies, soil microstructure, geotechnical thermodynamics and geotechnical hazards in recent years. Especially, it has characterizes in special soil properties and micromechanics, as well as geotechnical thermodynamics. The Faculty has achieved fruitful results in basic theory and engineering applications, which provide scientific basis for solving geotechnical engineering, environmental geology and disaster problems in major projects.
There are 12 teachers in the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, and 9 of them hold senior titles, including 5 professors (4 doctoral supervisors), 2 associate professors, 1 lecturer, 1 senior engineer and 2 engineers. One of them was honored as Teaching Master of Jilin Province, one is an Expert with Outstanding Contribution of Jilin Province, two won the Science and Technology Award for Youth and three are winners of Geological Sci-tech Silver Hammer Award for Youth of Geological Society of China. In addition, many teachers are serving in national industry societies and acting as jury experts of provincial and ministerial evaluation. The department owns an experienced team with reasonable structure, high theoretical level and diverse practices.
In recent years, the Department of Geotechnical Engineering has won many provincial and ministerial awards for scientific and technological achievements and teaching achievements. The course of Engineering Geotechnics is selected as Excellent Course of Jilin Province, and the geotechnical engineering teaching team is honored as the Excellent Teaching Team of Jilin Province. The department has published 6 monographs and textbooks. It has more than 20 projects of National Natural Science Foundation (including key, general, youth and international cooperation projects), and many scientific achievements won provincial and ministerial awards. More than 700 academic papers have been published in core journals, of which more than 300 have been retrieved by SCI and EI.
Department of Geotechnical Engineering has a very nice teaching platform with all necessary geotechnical and soil mechanics laboratories and high precision test equipment such as scanning electron microscope, mercury porosimeter and unsaturated soil triaxial instrument.
