Department of Tunneling and Underground Engineering was established in 2000. Currently, there are 7 staff members, including 3 doctoral supervisors, 3 professors and 3 associate professors. One of them is among the first batch of Provincial Excellent Experts of Jilin, one is the Expert with Outstanding Contribution of Jilin Province, and one is an Excellent Teacher of Jilin Province.

After nearly 20 years of development, the Department of Tunneling and Underground Engineering has distinctive features and advantages in evaluation of stability and support countermeasures of highway tunnel surrounding rock under complex conditions, information-technology-based tunnel construction technologies, tunnel construction blasting technologies, tunnels of special types, slope engineering stability forecast, early warning and tackling measures, theory and treatment methods of soft foundation, and evaluation of bearing capacity of large diameter pile foundation.

The department has achieved fruitful results in teaching and research. Rock Mechanics was awarded as the Excellent Course of Jilin Province. The department has undertaken more than 20 scientific research programs, including 4 programs of National Natural Science Foundation of China, 3 programs of National Natural Fund for Distinguished Young Scientists, 3 programs of the Science and Technology Committee Jilin Province and 5 programs of Department of Transportation of Jilin Province. In the past three years, the department published more than 80 scientific research and teaching papers, including more than 30 SCI papers, 20+ EI papers and 5 ISTP papers. In addition, more than 10 invention patents and 5 utility model patents were granted, and 8 textbooks were publicly published.
