Recently, Associate Prof. Zhang Nan returns to school after completing The East Greenland Ice-Core Project (EGRIP) 2018 in the North Pole.
EGRIP focuses on the research and drilling of ice core in the North Pole, organized by Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen. Scientist across the world participate in the project, like Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, US, UK, Japan, China, Russia, France, South Korea and Italy.
The work of EGRIP includes deep ice core drilling, ice core processing and analysis, research on glacier dynamics, snow and firn sampling and analysis, and ice-penetrating radar detection.
Zhang Nan joins in the second season of EGRIP 2018, working in the North Pole for about 50 days. In this season, the research team reaches 454 meters in ice core drilling and obtains ice core samples. The drilling depth exceeds 1750 meters. Zhang Nan is in charge of deep ice core drilling and the maintainence of drilling equipment, and he also participates in ice core processing and new equipment testing.
A cooperation agreement is inked by Jilin University and University of Copenhagen this year, in order to strengthen academic exchange on polar science and engineering, and facilitates the sending of professionals from JLU to join in research project in polar regions.
This is the first time for JLU to send professional to join in EGRIP in the North Pole. Zhang Nan has exchanged ideas on polar science and engineering with academics from different countries, and especially had a better understanding of advanced technology and equipment in Denmark. The participation of EGRIP not only enhances the reputation of Jilin University in ice core drilling, but also lays a foundation for future international cooperation.
