The JLU geological resources and engineering team keeps pushing the envelope in the areas of oil exploration, deep polar drilling, alternative energy development, etc. They developed a 10,000-meter-level drilling rig “Crust No. 1” with great success, and created a new record for scientific drilling of 7,018 meters in Asia. This made China the third country, after Russia and Germany, who has mastered 10,000-meter deep drilling technology.
With the support of deep drilling technology, Zhang Nan, a young teacher in JLU Geology Department, led even younger teachers and students to drill through the nearly 200-meter ice cap during the three-month scientific expedition in the Antarctic. The valuable samples of continuous ice cores and bedrock cores under the ice obtained in the mission, after further analysis and research, could shed light on ancient Antarctic climate and geological evolution.
