Representative Achievements

Professor Guo Wei is mainly engaged in the research of unconventional oil and gas drilling technology, and has made important groundbreaking contributions to the exploitation of resources which are extremely difficult to extract such as natural gas hydrate and oil shale and has been awarded the 16th China Youth Science and Technology Award.

As the technical leader of the project aimed at major technical problems of land gas hydrate exploration in China, Professor Guo devoted himself to the development of key technologies for cold drilling and thermal recovery of land-based natural gas hydrates which were applied to the land gas hydrate exploration project in the Muli Basin, Qinghai, China. The first land gas hydrate samples were obtained, making China the third country outside Russia and the United States to master the technology of land-based hydrate drilling.

Also, Professor Guo was the technical leader the project directed at the international cutting-edge technology of underground in-situ conversion of oil shale. With his participation, the new method of underground in-situ conversion of oil shale has been developed and applied to the pilot project of underground in-situ cracking of oil shale in Nong’an. The successful exploitation of high-quality oil shale oil from the underground marks a breakthrough in the exploitation and utilization of oil shale resources in China.

He presided over more than 10 national, provincial and ministerial projects such as the National Key R & D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the National Special Project for Hydrates. He won the second prize of the National Technology Invention Award, the first prize of the Technology Invention Award of the Ministry of Education and the first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education. Moreover, he won the Huang Jiqing Youth Geological Science and Technology Award which was the highest level of youth geological science and technology award in China, the Golden Hammer Award of the 14th Youth Geological Science and Technology Award of Geological Society of China, the Jilin Youth Science and Technology Award and the first Li Siguang Geosciences Outstanding Young Teacher Award of Jilin University. He was awarded a subsidy from the Jilin Provincial Government for his contributions. He was the third-level candidate of the third batch of top-notch innovative talents in Jilin Province. Besides, he was awarded a commemorative medal for celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
